Downend - ISLE OF WIGHT
What's around Downend?
Downend is a small hamlet quite near the centre of the Isle of Wight. A little way off the west coast of the island, it is home to a tranquil and quiet population, with a couple of inns and pubs dotted around, and some lovely housing and cottages. It makes a perfect break in the Isle of Wight for those looking to experience a serene, country atmosphere, but the hamlet isn’t so very far from the coast and other areas of the Isle of Wight, and so there is always plenty to explore if you feel like a busier vibe or want to explore more of the island.
The hamlet itself does get very busy in the late summer, as it is home to the popular festival, Bestival. Since 2004 this festival has been held in the Robin Hill country park and has seen artists such as Bjork, Amy Winehouse, Florence + the Machine and Stevie Wonder grace its stages over the years. As one of the fastest-growing and most popular festivals currently in the UK, Bestival is definitely worth going to at least once if you love live music and are travelling to the Isle of Wight on holiday. As with all other festivals, do book your accommodation far in advance to make sure that you have somewhere pleasant to stay. How about renting a holiday cottage near Downend and making the most of your trip?
Places to visit near Downend
Downend is the location of the popular Robin Hill theme park which is a sister park to Blackgang Chine and one of the best places to take children to on the island. Set in nearly 100 acres of sprawling land, rides at the park have an emphasis on ‘countryside ethos’ and include the Toboggan Run, a large wooden maze, a swinging ship, a tree top trail and the Snake and Hillbilly Slides. The area is noted for its range of rare wildlife such as the red squirrel, so is also great for those just wishing to sit back and take in all the excitement without actually going on any rides, as the surroundings are just lovely.
Downend is just 3 miles south-east of Newport, the county town of the Isle of Wight. As it is one of the largest and most populated places on the Isle of Wight, there is plenty to do, such as visiting the Classic Boat Museum. This museum is fascinating for those interested in maritime history, with photography displays, films, artefacts, trophies and classic wooden boats to discover and explore. Having opened in 1996, the museum is growing every day and is definitely worth the visit.
Newport Golf Club is just a short drive from Downend and offers holidaymakers yet another relaxing diversion.
