Places to visit near Borthwood - ISLE OF WIGHT

BORTHWOOD

Borthwood is a small area in the central eastern part of the Isle of Wight, near to the popular seaside resort of Sandown. With plenty of beautiful cottages in this rural and peaceful place, stunning woodland, tranquil streams and rolling hills, a stay in Borthwood is great for those looking to be at one with nature on a visit to the Isle of Wight, yet still be very close by to the golden sands of the beach. Borthwood has striking views over to the nearby Culver Down, a chalk cliff to the north of Sandown, which is just a mere 2 miles away, and you could easily spend an afternoon relaxing in your cottage garden while looking at the spectacular sights around you.

Borthwood is within walking distance from the National Trust Wood of Borthwood Copse, a splinter of the medieval forest which once covered an area much larger than what remains today. Originally a royal hunting ground, today the gorgeous oak woodland is teeming with an array of wildlife and plants, including the rare red squirrel and picturesque bluebells. Wandering through the chestnut thickets with slices of the sun streaming through open parts of the dense forest makes one of the most stunning walks you will ever take, and the copse is a must-see if visiting or staying in Borthwood – you won’t be able to resist it!

Sandown Pier Isle of WightSandown is very close to Borthwood and is one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Isle of Wight. The Sandown Pier is great to have a walk down with indoor mini golf and other arcade games to have a go at, plus great views of the sea at the end. It is also an optional place to visit during inclement weather.

Also in Sandown is Dinosaur Isle, Britain’s first ever dinosaur museum, and is a fabulous visit for those interested in the prehistoric creatures. With recreated landscapes, interactive displays, life-sized dinosaurs and guided fossil hunts, the museum is one of the most unique and exciting things to do in the area.
