Moortown is a lovely little settlement towards the south western part of the Isle of Wight and close by to the large village of Brighstone. Located in the Back of the Wight, the area of the island that is quite isolated compared with the rest, Moortown’s serene atmosphere is a haven for those looking for a country retreat on the Isle of Wight. There are plenty of bed and breakfasts as well as an array of cottages dotted throughout the community, which make lovely accommodations for couples and families to experience a different side to the island, where nearby wildlife scuttles past and the sea air brings a new lease of life into your lungs.

Moortown is only half a mile from the civil parish of Brighstone, and some may say that it is in fact a part of this village. If you fancy a slightly livelier atmosphere than Moortown then a visit here is a must, as there is plenty to see and do. There are independent boutiques, the Brighstone Shop and Museum with exhibitions on 19th century life in the village and the parish church of St. Mary’s which dates back to over eight centuries ago.

There is also an organic vegetable allotment and a gift shop, making this pure heaven for keen gardeners to visit.

Brighstone Bay near Moortown, a good place to hunt for fossilsClose by to both Moortown and Brighstone is Brighstone Bay. This gorgeous bay is located on the south of the island and is a 7km section of shell beach as well as chines and streams, and makes an excellent place to go on cliff-top hikes or meandering seaside walks.

Fossil hunts can also be done on this stretch of beach, either independently or with a qualified palaeontologist. The rich history of dinosaurs is something that makes the Isle of Wight special, and there is nothing quite like stumbling upon your very own piece of fossilised dinosaur!!

Moortown is pretty and peaceful, and makes a lovely cottage holiday destination on the Isle of Wight for those who want to experience quiet village life. Being nearby to larger settlements as well as the beach, there will always be plenty for visitors to see and do on a trip to this stunning island.
