Blackgang is a seaside village located in the central southern part of the Isle of Wight and is full of rich history and character. Known for being a haunt of smugglers and pirates, and being home to a wealth of dinosaur fossils, Blackgang used to be the location of a coastal ravine, otherwise known as a chine, until it was completely destroyed by erosion and landscapes over the course of the 20th century. Today, it is a pretty little village with incredible views over the English Channel and makes a wonderful place to visit for those who like to mix history with gorgeous scenery.

Blackgang is close to the town and civil parish of Ventnor meaning that you are never too far away from all the amenities of a larger resort. It is a perfect place to rent a seaside cottage, however, as there cliffs overlooking the sea, warm weather on the southern tip of the island and historical background make it an interesting choice for an Isle of Wight cottage holiday.

One of the most popular places to visit in Blackgang if coming with children is the Blackgang Chine amusement park. Having been opened in 1843 by the Dabell family, it is effectively the UK’s oldest theme park and has many attractions designed for the youngsters and the adults alike. Set within the Heritage coastline of the Isle of Wight on the Cretaceous cliffs, Blackgang Chine features a maze, cliff top walks, a roller coaster and water ride, Dinosaurland, pirate ship and many more attractions and rides.

For the older visitors there are exhibitions detailing the history of the Isle of Wight’s coastline and information about how Blackgang has changed due to the erosion of the cliffs. All in all, a visit to Blackgang Chine is a must if on holiday in the Isle of Wight, and even more so if you are planning on staying in the village of Blackgang.

If venturing out of Blackgang then do explore the beautiful seaside resort of Ventnor, with its Botanic Gardens, beautiful beaches and heritage museum.

coastal walks Blackgang Isle of WightClose the the Blackgang Chine Park is a path that leads along the top of the cliffs. The views along the path are superb. Care should be taken with children and dogs because the path does pass close to the cliff edges.

There is a car park here, picnic tables and often an ice cream van or similar fast food vendor.
