The old village of Alverstone is a different village from Alverstone Garden Villagewhich is a modern residential area which grew up in the decades between the 1930s and 1970s. The former railway line which ran through Alverstone from Newport to Sandown is now a traffic free cycle path.

Bird watchers frequent Alverstone Marshes to see waders and voles. This area of wetland is under the protection of the RSPB. A good place to see red squirrels is Alverstone Mead Nature Reserve just outside Alverstone.

SANDOWN ON THE COAST

SandownThe seaside resort of Sandown is about eleven miles away. Anyone renting a rural cottage near Alverstone will find the drive takes little more than eleven minutes.

The seafront offers all traditional amusements, plus there is a pier with lots of arcade machines and plenty of choice. Anglers fish off the end of the pier.
