Barton is a small village near Newport in the north central area of the Isle of Wight. It mostly consists of Victorian houses and St Paul’s parish church, built in 1844 by architect J. W. Wild. Barton is a lovely community and there are plenty of farms, creeks and forestry nearby to explore. It is quite a small village so if you are looking for more things to do then head out to the larger county town of Newport, one of the most populous areas on the Isle of Wight.

Isle of Wight Music FestivalJust east of Barton, a short walk away of only 5 minutes lies the high street of Newport, marking the beginning of this town that is home to over 20,000 people. Home to the annual Isle of Wight Music Festival, Newport is buzzing with exciting things to do.

The area was the island’s first town, founded in 1180, and houses the Museum of Island History where you can find out everything you need to know about the past and present of the Isle of Wight, all the way back to the age of the dinosaurs.

Also worth a visit in Newport is the Newport Roman Villa. Discovered in 1926, the villa dates back 1,700 years to around 280AD and the remains of this fascinating farmhouse are fun to explore. Areas of the villa have been reconstructed so that visitors can get a real insight into what it would have looked like, and there is a bath suite with under floor hearing and the remains of stunning mosaic flooring that just has to be seen. A visit to the Newport Roman Villa is a stone’s throw away from Barton and makes a wonderful family day out!
