Places to visit near Shide - ISLE OF WIGHT

Shide

Shide is a little hamlet located in the centre of the Isle of Wight, virtually a suburb of the county town of Newport and is somewhere that people drive through as they leave Newport going south on the A3020. Because of its proximity to the capital of the island, it is mainly residential with not too many amenities as the bustling atmosphere of Newport can be found just four minutes up the road from the settlement, but it is still an attractive area to visit or stay in, if you want a quieter atmosphere. Basic essentials such a petrol station are there.

About a mile down the road going south east is Newport 9 hole golf course, something useful that golfers may wish to know when holidaying in the Isle of Wight.

Shide Quarry is situated on the eastern side of the village, and during the beginning of the 20th century, was used to quarry chalk. A Site of Special Scientific Interest, the slope on the western side of the quarry is one of the most noticeable parts of the skyline of Newport looking out onto Shide, and this popular area is open to the public to visit. Due to the chalk slope showing the incredible transmission from chalk rock to ash woodland the site is now as Local Nature Reserve which is owned by the Isle of Wight Council, and budding biologists will be interested to visit this astonishing area.
