Whitwell is home to the oldest pub on the whole of the Isle of Wight, the White Horse, which dates back all the way to the 15th century! There is also other history to be seen around the village, as the only church in Whitwell, the Church of St. Mary and St. Radegund, is 700 years old, with parts dating back to the 12th century.

There is an old tradition of well blessing every year. Wells form an imprtant part of Whitwell's history and a certain well known as the 'white well' was believed to have special spiritual curative powers. Visitors should look out for the six red iron pumps that stand as a reminder of its watery history.

The villages of Niton and Niton Undercliff are under 1.5 miles drive, in addition to several other small villages and hamlets around Whitwell. Historically, there was a long standing dislike of Whitwell and Niton populations which caused many a rift between the families of courting couples as in 'Romeo and Juliet'.
